Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) is used to characterize the biofilm formation of Slime-forming bacteria on copper electrode surface for studying microbial adsorption on solid surface and exploring the microbial formation mechanism. The experimental results show that the equivalent circuit by experimental data fitting is basically consistent with the equivalent circuit based on theoretical analysis. The biofilm membrane thickness of 1.8 μm which was calculated by measuring the membrane capacitance is consistent with SEM observations. So
this research illustrates the feasibility of characterization of biofilms by using AC impedance and the correctness of microbial mass on the solid surface in the process of adsorption and the biofilm formation. This method is a powerful detection means for exploring the formation mechanism of biofilm and a great significance to real-time monitoring of the biofilm formation under the static state.
